Become a nail designer today!
The profession of nail technician is incredibly diverse and creative. You work with many different clients every day, beautifying their nails according to their wishes. Although your daily routine is the same, every nail is unique and different. Even a different nail shape can make the same color look different. This is what makes the job so special, and decorating with glitter, rhinestones, or other nail art is all the more fun. Unfortunately, in Switzerland, there is (currently) no formal apprenticeship for this profession, and therefore no federal certificate of competence. What does this mean?
To learn a profession, you typically complete a 2-4 year apprenticeship after compulsory schooling. This usually culminates in a certificate of competence. Unfortunately, this isn't possible in this profession. Becoming a nail technician is only possible through private training, which you'll have to pay for yourself. However, the profession is now recognized, both as an employed and self-employed nail technician. Nevertheless, you can still become a nail technician today. I'll explain how it works and what you need to consider.
Becoming a nail designer requires the right training
To perfect or learn the techniques and procedures, I recommend attending a nail training course. Whether you complete it as a one-day course or a multi-day training program is entirely up to you. The quality and content of the training are crucial when choosing your course. A good nail stylist never stops learning and will regularly participate in continuing education.
There are many nail design training courses available. However, not all of them are worth the money. If you're considering becoming a nail designer, make sure the course offers at least a certificate upon completion. It's always advantageous to be able to demonstrate your completed training and further education throughout your career as a nail designer. You should also inquire about the training materials. A comprehensive dossier is essential. You can take this home and refer back to it whenever you need to. Some instructors use a book as a teaching tool. “The Big Nail Design School”We also offer this in our online shop, should you already want to get a first taste of "nail design".

Becoming a nail designer despite fierce competition
As you can see, anyone can call themselves a "nail designer" without any prior knowledge or experience. The market is practically saturated, as it seems like there's a nail salon on almost every corner. However, the demand for nail salons is enormous. Many women regularly have their nails done by nail stylists. In the past, going to a nail salon was considered something special, a pampering treatment, simply part of a wellness routine. Today, it's taken for granted that you get your nails done at a salon. The nail salon market is fast-paced. Many customers have their nails done for years and then suddenly take a break. In the meantime, someone else decides to get their nails done at a salon for the first time. And so it goes on, with customers coming and going. This is also why the market can support so many nail salons. Furthermore, the quality and professionalism of a studio also determine its success. However, the intense competition shouldn't discourage you from becoming a nail designer.
Becoming a nail designer without training?
Just starting out and trying it on clients? I strongly advise against that. This profession is extremely comprehensive, and with incorrect or insufficient knowledge, you can cause serious damage to the natural nail. Furthermore, a good and thorough training will set you apart from other nail stylists. You can regularly practice the acquired skills in your studio and will constantly improve and become faster. Just because the profession doesn't require "official" training doesn't mean you should focus on it. Clients who want you to beautify their nails place their complete trust in you. They expect meticulous work from you.
It's true that in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, you can start working as a nail technician overnight and open a nail salon immediately. No training. No knowledge. No experience whatsoever. While this might seem tempting, such an undertaking can also be doomed to failure. You still have to adhere to numerous business regulations that can be inspected at any time. These include, for example, maintaining proper hygiene in the salon and keeping accurate accounts.
Becoming a nail designer through careful and thoughtful consideration
As a nail technician, you need an eye for detail. You work with great precision and care to meet your clients' wishes. You also need a lot of creativity, because you won't just be painting nails all day… Personally, you should be communicative and friendly, a good listener, and able to connect with clients. That covers your personal qualities.
On the other hand, you should be able to run a business (your nail salon). Professionalism is paramount and highly valued by customers. After your extensive training, you should therefore be able to meet these requirements.
Becoming a nail designer doesn't require years of training. It all depends on you and what you make of it.
